How Does Toyota Safety Sense™ Compare to Other Brands?

In this day and age, pretty much all modern cars have at least some form of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). This technology has become essential to the way we view on-road safety, and as the years go on, more and more extensive features are becoming standard for shoppers near Overland Park, KS.

Which brand has the best driver assistance features, though?

To find out, we’ll be comparing the Toyota Safety Sense™ package to some other big-name competitors. Here’s everything you need to know.

Toyota Safety Sense™ Features

Toyota Safety Sense Lane Detection

Before we compare to other brands, let’s take a moment to do a basic run-through of what Toyota Safety Sense™ (TSS) 3.0 is and how it helps drivers stay safe on the road.

  • Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC): Acting as an adaptive cruise control setting, DRCC allows you to select a desired speed and a preset distance from the vehicle ahead of you. The vehicle will automatically engage in braking and acceleration to keep you at the optimal distance.
  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD): This setting detects other vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists ahead of your car. If the system senses a collision, it will flash a warning, and if action isn’t taken, it can provide emergency automatic braking.
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA): Using sensors on the sides of the vehicle, LDA issues a warning if the car gets too close to another lane or the edge of the road. If action isn’t taken, the SA system gives gentle corrective steering to get you back on track.
  • Lane Tracing Assist (LTA): When DRCC is active, this system can provide active steering to keep the vehicle centered in the lane. If the Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) is equipped, it can also bring the vehicle to a stop if the driver doesn’t respond to inputs.

Toyota Safety Sense preventative Safety

  • Road Sign Assist (RSA): Camera technology at the front of the vehicle detects important road signs and shows them on the Multi-Information Display for easier viewing.
  • Automatic High Beams (AHB): This system automatically detects oncoming vehicles and adjusts the headlight settings, keeping you safe by illuminating dark roads, and keeping other drivers safe by avoiding blinding lights.
  • Proactive Driving Assist (PDA): When engaged, the PDA can provide subtle braking and steering assistance to keep an optimal distance between you and other vehicles.

Nearly all new Toyota models now come standard with TSS 3.0, which is the most up-to-date version of Safety Sense. All Toyota models also have several additional standard and available ADAS, including a backup camera, Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Safe Exit Alert (SEA), and more.

Toyota Safety Sense™ vs. Other Brands

Now that we know the ins and outs of TSS, let’s see how it compares to the competition.

Toyota Safety Sense™ vs. Subaru EyeSight®

Subaru EyeSight® includes the following features:

  • Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Pre-Collision Braking
  • Automatic Emergency Steering
  • Lane Departure and Sway Warning
  • Pre-Collision Throttle Management

Basics like adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, and corrective steering are present in Subaru EyeSight, but TSS gives drivers the option to use a greater degree of assistance with features like Proactive Driving Assist.

Toyota Safety Sense™ vs. Hyundai SmartSense

Key Hyundai SmartSense features include:

  • Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go
  • Highway Drive Assist
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian, Cyclist and Junction-Turning Detection
  • Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Warning
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Following Assist
  • High Beam Assist

Hyundai puts forth an impressive selection of safety features. However, unlike TSS, many of these features are only optional on many models, and they may be completely unavailable on lower trims, forcing shoppers to spend significantly more money if they want to enjoy the safest cars.

Toyota Safety Sense™ vs. Honda Sensing®

Honda Sensing comes with the following features:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System
  • Road Departure Mitigation System
  • Lane Keeping Assist System
  • Cross Traffic Monitor
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Traffic Sign Recognition

Out of the bunch, Honda probably has one of the most impressive collections of features. Many are comparable to TSS, but unfortunately, some features like the Blind Spot Information System are only optional on certain models. Honda also includes fewer additional available ADAS than Toyota.
