The New Toyota 4Runner: 5 Things You Need to Know

The last generation of Toyota 4Runners was released all the way back in 2010, and the last update to that generation came out last year. After 15 years, the 2025 Toyota 4Runner comes charging out of the gate with plenty of new updates and features to entice any driver looking for a new vehicle. Just because it has some new tech doesn’t mean the Toyota 4Runner off-road capabilities have been swept under the rug. This rugged vehicle easily tops the list for one of the best SUVs for off-roading in 2025, handles like a dream, and is built to last.

With all that said and out of the way, let’s dive into a quick new Toyota 4Runner review and look at the five things you need to know about it.

2025 Toyota 4Runner Redesign

Toyota 4Runner Engine Options

The new 4Runner model uses the same platform as the Toyota Tacoma truck and shares the same i-FORCE 2.4L 4-cylinder Turbo engine with 278 horsepower, making it a fun drive on pavement and on dirt roads once you get out of Kansas City limits. You also have the option of the i-FORCE 2.4L 4-cylinder Turbo hybrid powertrain engine available in the 4Runner TRD Pro trim with an extra kick at 326 horsepower.

2025 4Runner Engine

The new 4Runner exterior catches the eye with bold, striking curves and an overall squared design, immediately letting you and others know that this rugged machine is at home wherever you decide to drive it.

Under the Hood of the New 4Runner

The 4Runner comes standard with a rear-wheel drive layout; however, a four-wheel drive layout is optional, and for those who intend to do a lot of off-roading beyond Overland Park and Lee’s Summit, it’s the preferred choice for greater traction and handling. Regardless of the layout you choose, the 4Runner has a locking rear differential, disconnection stabilizing bars, and cruise control adapted for off-roading.

Additionally, the Hybrid 4Runner comes with manually adjustable dampers to enhance your off-road experiences.

Toyota 4Runner Interior and Tech

The platform isn’t the only thing the 4Runner shares with the Tacoma; their interiors are incredibly similar and, therefore, comfortable and spacious. The console and gauges are all digitally displayed, and each trim comes with a standard 8” infotainment display; you can also upgrade to the optional 14” display.

New 4runner Technology

As far as tech comforts go, you can connect and play your favorite music and podcasts via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and keep your devices charged with USB-C ports or with an optional wireless charging pad.

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0

The 4Runner comes standard with a myriad of safety programs to keep you and your family safe. Here is what is included in the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0:

Lane departure warning and lane assist

   Pedestrian detection

   Auto emergency braking

   Adaptive cruise control

   Blindspot monitoring

   A digital rearview mirror

   And more.

Toyota 4Runner Interior Features & Connectivity

By connecting your phone or smartwatch to the Toyota app, you can remotely start, lock, and find your vehicle with just a touch. You can also make the 4Runner a Wi-Fi hotspot so you can stay connected anywhere you go. Lastly, protect yourself and your vehicle even further with Safety Connect. Safety Connect comes with accident response, stolen vehicle location tools, and 24/7 roadside assistance.
