2020 Toyota Supra Past and Present
Pictured right is the 2020 Toyota Supra with optional features.
Whether you remember the various Supra models of the 20th century or are only just discovering what this performance vehicle can do with its 2020 incarnation, there’s no question that this ride is something to behold. Since the Supra has enjoyed substantial appeal throughout the decades, would like to take a moment and dive into its past, so fans both old and new can appreciate what makes the most recent edition tick.
Our story traces its roots back to 1978, when Toyota engineers took the Celica sedan and turned into a pavement-devouring beast with the addition of a 6-cylinder engine, a lengthened chassis, and some luxurious interior amenities. The Supra’s second generation, the A60, hit the road in 1982, featuring larger wheels, lights that popped right out of the hood, and two varieties depending on your preferences: the upscale “L-type” and performance-driven “P-type”. Both versions included a 2.8L powertrain under the hood, capable of producing up to 161 horsepower and 169 lb.-ft. of torque. Given these advantages, it’s no wonder the Supra quickly rose through the ranks of global performance vehicles!
A few years later in 1986, the Supra earned a 3.0L turbo engine in the A70, placing a hefty 232-hp and 254 lb.-ft. of torque under the command of its driver. When designing this edition, Toyota specifically focused on power, arming it with innovations such as variable air induction and electronically-adjustable dampers. Finally, the Supra A80 wrapped up this model’s time in the Toyota lineup, appearing between 1993 and 1998 and thrilling motorists with its 0-to-60 MPH time of 4.6 seconds and near-perfect weight balance. Indeed, the A80 was perhaps the most iconic of the different Supra sports cars, becoming a highly-sought ride once the lineup was discontinued.
The 2020 Supra
Although it took more than two decades for the to return to the streets with a new iteration, the wait was well worth it. Without question, this version stays true to its heritage by including a 3.0L twin-scroll turbo 6-cylinder engine beneath the hood, just like the generations that came before. Furthermore, its inner mechanics are just as refined, as you’ll be able to handle corners and bends like a pro, thanks to the responsiveness of the adaptive suspension, rigid chassis, and 8-speed automatic transmission. In the end, you’ll have up to 335-hp and 365 lb.-ft. of torque available to tap into.
